11 Friendly Tips For a Hassle-free Voting Day

The 2016 National Election is just right around the corner. On Monday, May 9, 2016, every registered voter in the country will be shading their bets’ eggs to decide who will be the next leaders of the country, especially the president for the next six years.

When you’ve decided on whom to vote for, keep in mind these important reminders for hassle-free voting come election day.

Before going to the polling precinct:

1. Write your list of candidates or kodigo beforehand so that you won’t take too long at the polls and refrain from making unnecessary mistakes on your ballot. Remember, if you mistakenly vote for another candidate, there’s not taking it back. Don’t just vote wisely, vote prepared.

2. Bring your voter’s ID (or registration stub for new registrants) or any government-issued ID to confirm your identity. This will help the election officer confirm that you are who you say you are.

3. BE EARLY. Polling places open at 6AM and close at 5PM. Line-up early. Summer temperatures peak at the afternoon, even more so with El Nino. You wouldn’t want to get stuck in a long line under the heat.

4. If voting in the afternoon can’t be helped, bring a bottle of water and fan with you. Most polling precincts won’t have air conditioning so stay hydrated and keep cool.

5. Check your precinct in advance here. This will save you a lot of time scrambling around the polling place looking for your precinct.

At the polling precinct:

1. Find your name at the Posted Computerized Voters List (PCVL) posted by the door of the polling place. Find your precinct number and sequence number.

2. Find the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) to check if you have already been given the indelible ink and verify your identity at the Election Day Computerized Voters List (EDCVL)

3. Get the official marker, official ballot and ballot secrecy folder from the BEI before heading to the voting area. Use your kodigo as a guide when voting.

4. Make sure you shade your votes properly using the BEI’s official marker. Ballpens, pencils, and any other writing implements will not be allowed. Do not tear, smudge, or crumple your ballot. DO NOT OVERVOTE. Overvoting will invalidate your votes for that particular category. Always check the number of votes allowed per category. This will be indicated on the ballot.

5. After filling out your ballot, insert it into the VCM (Vote Counting Machines) and return the ballot secrecy folder and marking pen to the BEI.

6. DO NOT leave without seeing your voting receipt and having the indelible ink applied on your forefinger nail.

7. When your receipt has been printed, wait for the poll clerk to cut it out. Triple-check to make sure everything is in order on your voting receipt. If there are any questions about your receipt, inform the BEI. If everything is confirmed correct, drop the voting receipt at the provided receptacle.

NOTE: You are NOT ALLOWED to bring out or take pictures of your voting receipt and ballot. Taking your voting receipt with you can result in jail time. And there you have it.

Keep these friendly reminders in mind come May 9 and everything should work out just fine.
