COCOGEN's Metro Manila Flood Navigation Tips
We at COCOGEN understand how hard it is to navigate Metro Manila's streets when the rainy season comes so here are some tips to help you get through our yearly flooding problems. If braving through the flood is the only course of action, keep in mind these following tips:
Do your best to estimate the depth of the flood water.
If there are other cars driving through that are able to pass with relative ease, try going ahead a few meters to see if your car can. However, you should take note of what vehicles are able to pass. Your sedan might not be able to pass through a flooded street that only SUVs and trucks can. Better yet, ask the locals. Saying you were “uninformed” isn’t and will never be an excuse.
Drive steadily and slowly in the flood water.
It will at least reduce the water pressure battering on your car and the risk of your car’s internal mechanisms from taking on water. Watch for items/debris travelling downstream that may hit your car and cause more damages. It’s bad enough that you’re driving through a flooded street, getting a flat tire will only make it worse. If flood levels are almost halfway through your rims, test your brakes on a clear patch of road at low speed. If your brakes are not stopping as they should, you can dry them by pressing gently on the pedal with your left foot while maintaining your speed with your right foot.
Turn off your mobile phones as much as possible to save on battery when you need it most. Turn then on only if you need to report a severe injury or call for roadside assistance.
If your car stops in the middle of a flooded street, try to restart it and do your best to park it in a safe place.
Just remember that this may cause some damage to your car as well. Worst case scenario, if your car gets trapped on a street with continuously rising flood levels, take all your valuables from your car, do your best to secure it, leave it and make for higher and safer ground.
Contact your motor insurance company immediately and inform them that your car will need repair and towing services once the flood subsides.
Being prepared is your first line of defense. By following these tips, you will not just keep you and your family safe but your car as well. But if you want to insure your car’s maximum security and protection against any physical damage, you can count on COCOGEN’s Motor Excel Plus to take care of the rest. Our Motor Insurance policyholders have exclusive access to more extensive services namely Gawa Agad Claims Service and our 24/7 Road Pal Rescue services.
