The internet has made life incredibly convenient, from online banking to shopping and even managing bills from the comfort of home. But as our digital lives grow, so do the risks. In recent years, online scams have become more advanced, personal, and harder to detect.

In the Philippines alone, there’s been a steady rise in reports of online fraud, especially scams involving fake online sellers, phishing emails, and even identity theft through compromised social media accounts. And while most of us know not to click suspicious links or give away passwords, scammers are getting smarter and sneakier.

Common Online Scams You Should Watch Out For:

1.    Fake Online Stores

Some online stores selling gadgets or trendy items like cellphones and accessories appear convincing, often showing thousands of likes, comments, shares and even positive reviews. What many don’t know is that these bogus stores buy likes and followers to appear legitimate. Once people start ordering and sending payments, the items are never delivered. Eventually, the page is deleted or renamed. Victims are left with no way to get their money back and no way to contact the seller.

2.    Phishing Emails or Texts

Scammers now impersonate legitimate organizations like cellular networks, government agencies, and banks by sending fake messages with clickable links or attachments. These messages often look official, tricking users into giving personal information or credentials. According to GMA News, over 6 million scam text messages were recorded in the Philippines in 2024, many of which appeared to come from trusted sources. Once you click, scammers may gain access to your accounts or steal your identity.

3.    Unauthorized Purchases

Digital wallets are convenient, but they’re also vulnerable. In late 2024, GCash users reported unauthorized transactions on their accounts, even without clicking on suspicious links. Some woke up to see thousands of pesos transferred out overnight. Though GCash responded and investigated, the incident highlighted how personal data leaks and weak security can still lead to account takeovers and lost funds, often before users can even react.

4.    Identity Theft

Identity theft happens when someone uses your personal information, like your SSS number, ID, or full name, to commit fraud, such as applying for loans or benefits. In the Philippines, there have been cases of scammers using stolen data to file false transactions under another person’s name, leading to financial and legal troubles for the real account holder. Recovering from this kind of fraud can be time-consuming, expensive, and emotionally draining.
