COCOGEN Insurance proudly supported the Philippine Athletics Team by providing their travel insurance in the recently concluded 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from August 19 to 30, 2017. The SEA Games is a biennial multi-sport event where eleven countries of Southeast Asia participated, with approximately 4,900 athletes contending through 38 different sporting events. As the SEA Games kicked off last August 19, the Philippine Athletics Team surged to a blazing start with Mary Joy Tabal bagging the first gold for the Philippines in the women’s marathon. Adding to the gold medal count are Aries Toledo (decathlon) and Anthony Beram (men’s 200-meter run). Beram proceeded to win another gold in the men’s 400-meter run. In boxing, John Marvin and Eumir Felix Marcial garnered a gold medal each for their bouts. The Philippines’ men’s fours lawn bowls team won an unexpected gold. Another unanticipated gold came from the Philippine Ice Hockey team, as they won the men’s ice hockey competition during their debut SEA Games run. The Poomsae trio Dustin Jacob Mella, Raphael Enrico Mella, and Rodolfo Reyes Jr. won another gold whilst defending their title as 2-time champs. Samuel Morison won taekwondo gold for the men’s lightweight division. Competing against another Filipina, Chezka Centeno bagged the women’s 9-ball singles title (billiards), while Carlos Biado scored a gold in the men’s 9-ball. To top it all off, Dines Dumaan earned the Philippines’ last gold medal as he reigned supreme in the men’s pencak silat tanding putra class A (45-50 kg) category. The Philippine Athletics Team, comprised of 389 athletes, won 24 gold, 33 silver, and 64 bronze medals – a total of 121 medals for this year’s SEA Games run.
