Practical Uses of Coconut at Home

It is common knowledge that coconut is called the “tree of life.” Ever wondered why? Read on and you’ll find the answer. The coconut tree or Cocos nucifera (nut-bearing) can be seen around the Philippines but it is most prominent in Southern Luzon, Eastern Visayas, Western and Southern Mindanao. In 2015, our country was the world’s second largest coconut producer for exporting over 18 million tons of coconuts. Thus, giving the Philippines a strong grasp in the world trade industry contributing to a better economy. Coconut production provides job opportunities to the rural poor and gives them livelihood through the creation of handicrafts, food, and cosmetic products. It is also beneficial to homes and has a lot more to offer. From its deepest roots to its highest leaf swaying with the wind, you’ll find something you can use. The Roots Coconut roots are normally used as an ingredient for beverages and medicine. It can be used as improvised dye, mouthwash, and even toothbrush, in your home. The Trunk Also known as coco lumber, the coconut trunk can be used for creating furniture and fixing some joints in your house. Its strength is proven suitable for house construction. It can be turned into a table, a chair, or even a mini cabinet. Just make sure you have the right tools handy. The Leaves It is normal for Filipinos to gather the rachis or the midribs of the coconut leaves and turn them into a broom or locally called as walis tingting. Some make baskets out of these and sell it for a living. Moreover, it can be used as an improvised roof for a mini shed in front of your house. The Fruits Of all the parts of the coconut tree, its fruit is the most beneficial. The coconut fruit husk can be turned into a floor scrub or bunot in Tagalog, used for cleaning the floor together with a floor wax. The coconut shell can be used as decoration and an improvised bowl for food consumption and cooking. The coil or the natural elastic fiber extracted from the husk can be turned into floor mats or doormats, brushes, ropes, strings, and mattress stuffing while you can extract coconut oil from the coconut meat. But of course, who would forget the yummy coconut recipes that you can make at home? Aside from the tuba or the drink extracted from the coconut sap and the lambanog or the coconut vodka, the coconut fruit can be a great ingredient for different delicacies and desserts. The coconut meat can be turned into homemade desserts like coco jam and buko pie (coconut pie). Also, you can extract the coconut milk from the ground coconut meat which you can use to make fish ginataan as well as ginataang bilu-bilo. See how the coconut tree contributes to our daily lives? With all these benefits that a coconut tree has to offer, there is no doubt that it truly deserves to be called the “tree of life.” Thus, we must also give ample attention on continuing ou efforts towards preserving and improving the coconut industry as it brings so much help to our country’s well-being.
